Painting the Unites States' Civil war: Or Creating a Brotherly War
2015
This article seeks to illustrate Benedict Anderson’s theory of the “Reassurance of Fratricide” and “the act of remembering/forgetting” through depictions of the Civil War in US fine arts. This is mostly done through the Smithsonian art data base and the paintings referenced under the label Civil War, spanning from the 1860s to the 1890s. This paper first analyzes how these paintings were used to depict the Confederate soldier’s otherness as typically American and thus helped with the post-war reintegration of the Confederacy. This study then examines how in certain paintings the war was brought inside the realm of domesticity and family, which reinforced the idea of a fratricide and a famil…
"Vain tosirakkauden teko voi sulattaa jäätyneen sydämen" : kuinka disneyfikaatio on vaikuttanut H. C. Andersenin Lumikuningatar-satuun
2014
Tutkielman tavoitteena on tarkastella sitä, millä tavoin Disney on muuttanut Hans Christian Andersenin Lumikuningatar-satua adaptoidessaan sitä kokopitkäksi animaatioelokuvaksi Frozen - Huurteinen seikkailu. Aihetta tarkastellaan erityisesti disneyfikaation (vapaa suomennos englannin sanasta "disneyfication") käsitteen kautta.

A Eulogy in Honour of Anders Johan Lexell, an 18th Century Finnish Mathematician
2016
We present a poem written in the honour of Anders Johan Lexell (1740–1784), a mathematician of Finnish origin, who became a collaborator and successor of Leonhard Euler. The poem was composed in Latin by Fredrik Pryss (1741–1767) in the honour of the 18-year-old promising young man in 1759. We discuss the poem itself and its connections to ancient poetic tradition as well as the foresight of Pryss in seeing the career that lay ahead of Lexell. We find that the poem is of excellent quality as a piece of art following ancient style in form, language and content. Discussing Lexell’s life in light of the poem reveals that Pryss did see that Lexell would rise to fame, but not how. peerReviewed
